MATADOR FC VS FC Socheaux

By Martin Stevens
2/21/2010
Date: 21-Feb
Time: 11 AM
Venue: Bowen Secondary School
Result: MATADOR FC(1) - FC Socheaux(3)
Here's a first - I am going to congratulate
the referee! Not on a faultless performance
albeit, he had a pretty decent game all in
all, but that a ref (and an experienced one
at that) had the decency to hold his hand up
and admit to a mistake at the end of the
game. Fair enough, because Matador
players were hardly beyond blame for a
somewhat disappointing defeat either. We
should have scored more than just the
solitary Jocelyn first half strike and turned
possession into the only commodity that
really matters.
The 'equaliser', I had a pretty decent view
of from the touchline and there was no way
I could see it was over the line. Without a
linesman, the referee made a judgement
call that it had crossed the line from his
position on the edge of the area or so. The
keeper 'knew' he had scrambled it out
before the ball had reached the line, never
mind crossed it and so was justifiably
incenced. I think in hindsight all players and
officials would agree that no goal should be
awarded unless the the referee is absolutely
sure the ball has crossed the line but
unfortunately we did not get the benefit of
the doubt today.

We hit the bar (twice?) once a thumping
header from Jeremie with the score at one
apiece but otherwise it was an uninspiring
second half showing.

That said, maybe Socheaux deserved a
break today. The fact this was their first win
in a tight division is a bit surprising and
judging from the tightness of their defeats,
maybe they were due a bit of luck. 3-1
perhaps flattered them as we pushed
forward in the closing stages and got caught
on the break.

One final thought - had the ball crossed the
line and our keeper had known it, would he
(and our defenders) have admitted as
much? As the gaffer, I would have no
problem with this and would encourage it in
a league lacking linesmen. We all try and
get away with what we can at times but it
would be great if we all did what we could to
make the refs job a little bit easier! At the
end of the day, it's only a game after all!
